1. Choosing Your Sichuan Route: 3 Days vs. 5 Days vs. 7 Days
Sichuan is divided into two completely different worlds: the lush, subtropical Chengdu Basin (home to Giant Pandas, 3,000-year-old Sanxingdui gold masks, Leshan Giant Buddha, and spicy hotpot) and the dramatic, snow-capped Western Sichuan Tibetan Plateau (Chuanxi / 川西) rising above 4,000 meters. Here is how to structure your days:
The 3-Day Chengdu Cultural & Culinary Core
Local tip: Many visitors enter the Chengdu Panda Base through the busy South Gate. The West Gate (西门) can be a calmer alternative; arrive for opening time, check current hours and book ahead, then walk through the newer zones while the pandas are active. Spend the afternoon at Wenshu Monastery and watch an evening face-changing opera at Shufeng Yayun.
Take an 18-minute high-speed train from Chengdu East Station to Guanghan North to witness the alien-like 12th-century BC bronze masks at the Sanxingdui Museum (book ahead, especially at weekends and during holidays). Return to Chengdu for ear-cleaning and jasmine tea at People's Park, followed by authentic beef tallow hotpot in Yulin.
Ride the intercity train from Xipu Station (30 mins) to Dujiangyan, walk across the swaying Anlan Suspension Bridge, and stay until dusk when the historic Nanqiao Covered Bridge lights up the rushing Minjiang River in glowing neon blue.
The 5-Day Classic Sichuan (Chengdu + Leshan + Mount Emei + Jiuzhaigou Option)
Combine Days 1–2 of the Chengdu Core above with a 3-day loop south to the 71-meter Leshan Giant Buddha and the misty Buddhist temples of Mount Emei (3,077m Golden Summit)—or take the high-speed rail north to Huanglongjiuzhai Station for the turquoise alpine lakes of Jiuzhaigou National Park:
- Day 3 (Leshan Boat vs. Walk): Take the 50-minute C-train from Chengdu East to Leshan. Local tip: Skip the 3-hour cliff staircase queue on weekends and take the ¥70 panoramic river boat to see the entire 71-meter Buddha from head to toe, then spend your saved 2 hours eating Leshan Sweet-Skin Duck (甜皮鸭) and Bobo Chicken!
- Day 4 (Mount Emei Golden Summit): Ride the park bus to Leidongping, hike 30 minutes through wild Tibetan macaque territory to Jieyin Hall, and take the cable car above the sea of clouds to the ten-faced golden statue of Samantabhadra.
- Day 5 (Baoguo Temple & Return to Chengdu): Descend for a bamboo-forest monastery walk and hot spring soak before your 70-minute bullet train back to Chengdu.
The 7-Day Western Sichuan Loop (Kangding → Tagong → Danba → Siguniang)
Just 4 hours west of Chengdu's subways, the Sichuan Basin crashes into the eastern wall of the Himalayas. Known to Chinese photographers on Xiaohongshu as "Chuanxi" (川西小环线), this 1,100-kilometer alpine loop takes you across 4,298-meter Zheduo Pass, the golden-roofed Muya Tibetan Monastery on Tagong Grasslands facing sacred Mount Yala (5,820m), the ancient stone watchtowers of Danba (Zhonglu Tibetan Village), and the "Eastern Alps" of Mount Siguniang (Four Girls Mountain).
