How to Book a China Trip in 2026: The 7-Step Booking Stack
Most first-time China trips go wrong in the same way: flights are booked first, then the traveller discovers that the visa-free route does not qualify, the hotel cannot register a foreign passport, or the train booking window has not opened yet.
This guide is the order we would use ourselves. It is not a list of every website in China. It is the sequence that reduces rework and keeps your money refundable for as long as possible.
- 01Check entry eligibility and routing
- 02Book the international flight
- 03Choose and book hotels
- 04Reserve high-speed trains
- 05Book timed attractions and tours
- 06Install eSIM and VPN
- 07Set up Alipay / WeChat Pay
Do steps 1–2 before committing to non-refundable hotels or tours. Steps 6–7 can be done from home and should not be left until arrival.
Check entry eligibility before you pay for anything
Do this first. It determines which flight you should book.
As of October 2026, 50 countries have 30-day unilateral visa-free entry, and 57 countries have 240-hour visa-free transit. The two lists overlap, and the better option depends on your passport and route. UK, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean and most EU passport holders currently qualify for the 30-day policy; US passport holders are on the 240-hour transit list but not the 30-day list. China also has mutual 30-day arrangements with countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Serbia, the UAE and Belarus.
If you rely on 240-hour transit, your itinerary must be A → mainland China → C, where C is a different country or region. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan count. A simple round trip does not qualify. You also need to enter through a designated port and stay within the permitted area.
This is planning information, not legal advice. Confirm with the NIA and your airline before booking non-refundable travel.
Book the international flight
For Sichuan, the main gateway is Chengdu Tianfu (TFU); Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) is closer to the city but has fewer international routes.
- If using 240-hour transit: book the onward leg to a third country or region at the same time, and keep the confirmed itinerary. A return ticket to your home country is not enough.
- Compare the total journey, not just the fare: a cheap flight that lands at 02:00 may cost more in airport transfers and a wasted hotel night.
- Leave a buffer before domestic connections. Immigration and baggage can take longer than expected at peak times.
- Do not book non-refundable hotels or tours until the flight and entry route are confirmed.
Choose hotels by neighborhood, then compare platforms
The cheapest room in the wrong district is a false saving.
Trip.com is often stronger for…
- Chinese domestic hotel brands and local boutiques
- China train and attraction bundles
- English support that can call the hotel directly
Booking.com can be stronger for…
- International chains and loyalty programmes
- Some European-language customer support
- Free-cancellation options on international brands
Wherever you book, confirm in writing that the property accepts foreign passport holders and can complete police registration. This matters most for small homestays. Read our Chengdu neighborhood and hotel guide before choosing an area.
Reserve high-speed trains when the window opens
China’s rail network is excellent; the booking rules are the hard part.
- The 12306 booking window is commonly around 15 days before departure, but it can change. Check the current window before planning around a specific train.
- Your passport is your ticket. Use the same passport details at booking and at the station.
- Popular routes and holiday dates sell out. Chengdu–Leshan, Chengdu–Emeishan and Chengdu–Huanglongjiuzhai are busy at weekends and during Golden Week.
- Trip.com can queue the request and issue the ticket when sales open, which is useful if you cannot be online at the exact release time.
Book timed attractions and tours
The Panda Base and major museums are not walk-up attractions in peak season.
Book a morning slot at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and reserve Sanxingdui and Jiuzhaigou tickets as soon as your dates are fixed. For day tours that include transport, compare Klook and GetYourGuide; for simple entry tickets, the official channel or Klook is usually enough.
Install the eSIM and VPN before you fly
This is a from-home task, not an arrival task.
Mobile data: travel eSIM
A travel eSIM usually routes data outside mainland China, which often restores blocked apps on mobile data. Compare plan terms, hotspot rules and activation timing.
Hotel Wi-Fi and laptops: VPN
An eSIM does not change how hotel Wi-Fi works. If you need Google, WhatsApp or work tools on a laptop, install and test a VPN before departure.
Read the eSIM comparison and the China VPN guide before choosing. Keep your home SIM active for bank SMS codes.
Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay from home
QR payment is the norm. A card that works in your home country may still trigger a verification check in China.
Install both apps, register with your home number, complete passport verification and link at least two cards. Remember the platform fee: payments of ¥200 or less have no Alipay/WeChat platform fee; above ¥200, a 3% fee applies to the full amount. Your card issuer’s foreign-exchange fee may also apply.
What a 10-day China trip typically costs
Indicative ranges for a mid-range independent trip, excluding international flights. Prices vary by season, city and how far ahead you book.
| Item | Indicative range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels | $60–$150 per night | Mid-range to upper-midscale; international chains cost more. |
| High-speed trains | $20–$80 per leg | Chengdu–Leshan is cheaper; longer routes cost more. |
| Food | $20–$45 per day | Street food and local restaurants vs. hotel dining. |
| Attractions | $10–$40 each | Panda Base, Sanxingdui, Leshan, Emei cable car. |
| eSIM | $10–$30 | Depends on data allowance and days. |
| VPN | $5–$15 for one month | Only needed for hotel Wi-Fi or laptops. |
| Typical total (10 days) | $1,000–$2,200 | Excludes international flights; solo traveller, mid-range. |
Booking timeline
Check entry eligibility, book flights, reserve hotels with free cancellation, and map your route.
Book timed attractions and any tours. Confirm hotel foreign-guest registration in writing.
Buy and install the eSIM, install the VPN, set up Alipay/WeChat Pay, and notify your bank.
Save hotel addresses in Chinese, check the train booking window, and confirm onward tickets if using transit.
Five avoidable mistakes
- Booking a round-trip flight and assuming it qualifies for 240-hour transit. It does not.
- Buying a physical SIM at the airport and expecting Google or WhatsApp to work without a VPN.
- Leaving Alipay verification until you are standing at a cashier with no data.
- Booking a hotel that cannot register a foreign passport, especially a small homestay.
- Assuming a train ticket is available because the timetable shows the train. Wait for the booking window.
