The most common border crossing in China is also the one with the most confused paperwork. Both halves are simple once separated.
Two questions get tangled at this border: which crossing do I walk into, and does my passport let me enter China from here. Separate them and the day trip becomes routine.
The document half first: Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan count as third regions under China’s transit and visa-free rules. If your passport is on the 30-day unilateral visa-free list, you can enter the mainland directly from Hong Kong. If you are using the 240-hour transit, entering from Hong Kong counts as arriving from a third region — and your onward ticket must leave to yet another one.
The short answer
| Checkpoint | Get there by | Lands you at | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lo Wu 罗湖 | MTR East Rail, the terminus | Shenzhen Metro Line 1 (罗湖站) | Roughly 06:30–midnight |
| Futian 福田 | MTR East Rail to Lok Ma Chau spur | Shenzhen Line 4 toward the CBD | Roughly 06:30–late evening |
| Huanggang 皇岗 | Cross-boundary shuttle bus | Bus side of the border; taxi onward | 24 hours |
Both pedestrian crossings are immigration on both sides: Hong Kong exit, short walk, mainland entry with your passport. Weekday mornings and Sunday evenings are the queues; Chinese public holidays can turn a 20-minute crossing into more than an hour.
Depends on your passport. If your nationality is on the 30-day unilateral visa-free list, you enter the mainland from Hong Kong without any visa. If you are using the 240-hour transit, entering from Hong Kong counts as arriving from a third region and you need a confirmed onward ticket to yet another country or region. Everyone else needs a visa obtained in advance.
Lo Wu if you are riding the East Rail line from Kowloon or Central - it is the line’s terminus and the border hall is at the platform. Futian if your destination is central Shenzhen, because it lands you on a line heading to the CBD. Huanggang, reached by shuttle bus, is the 24-hour option.
No. It stops at the border. Shenzhen Metro reads its own QR code, which Alipay and WeChat Pay can generate, or you can buy single-ride tokens at station machines.
Twenty to forty minutes through both immigrations on a normal weekday, longer at Sunday evening northbound peaks and Chinese holidays. The rail ride from Central to Lo Wu is about 45 minutes on top of that.
Only if your data plan covers the mainland. Some Hong Kong eSIMs include mainland roaming and some do not - check the listing. Mainland apps are happier with a mainland data line, which our eSIM comparison sorts out.
No operator paid for inclusion. Some booking links earn a commission at no extra cost to the reader. Details change — confirm with the official source before you travel.
The crossing is routine if your nationality is settled and your data line works on both sides. Everything else is a metro ride.
