The train is the easy part. Choosing the right Chongqing station for your hotel is the actual decision.
Chengdu and Chongqing are the two anchors of the Sichuan Basin, and the high-speed line between them is one of the busiest in western China. Trains run from early morning to late evening, so the trip itself is rarely the problem.
The problem is the last 40 minutes: Chengdu has two main stations and Chongqing has three, and picking the wrong pair adds a needless metro ride with luggage. This guide fixes that, then gives you a two-day plan that fits the city's hills.
Most fast trains leave from Chengdu East (成都东). A smaller number use Chengdu South. On the Chongqing side, the three stations serve different sides of a very hilly city.
| Station | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Chengdu East 成都东 | Most G trains; central Chengdu (Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li) | Large station; arrive 30–40 min early |
| Chengdu South 成都南 | Some services; convenient from southern hotels | Fewer departures; check the station on your ticket |
| Chongqing North 重庆北 | Jiefangbei, Hongyadong, Chaotianmen | Metro Line 3/10 then a short taxi; avoid rush hour |
| Chongqing West 重庆西 | Western and southern districts | Farther from the classic sights |
| Shapingba 沙坪坝 | Ciqikou, university district, budget hotels | Metro Line 1/9/loop line; good for a quieter base |
Rule of thumb: if your hotel is in Jiefangbei or near Hongyadong, book to Chongqing North. If you are staying in Ciqikou or Shapingba, the Shapingba stop is easier. For a one-night trip, the station choice matters more than saving 10 minutes on the train.
Chongqing is vertical: a 300 m map distance can mean 40 m of stairs. Wear grippy shoes, travel light, and use the metro rather than guessing walking times.
The fastest G-series trains take about 1 hour 25 to 30 minutes from Chengdu East to Chongqing North. Most services run 1.5 to 2 hours. Slower D-series trains take 2 hours or more but cost less.
Chongqing North is usually the most convenient for Jiefangbei and Hongyadong, with metro Line 3 or 10 plus a short taxi. Shapingba suits Ciqikou; Chongqing West is better for the western and southern districts.
Yes, but it is a long day: roughly six usable hours in Chongqing with the fastest trains. Most travellers do better staying one night so they can see Hongyadong after dark.
Book when the roughly 15-day window opens for weekends and holidays. Midweek seats are usually available a few days out, but the fastest morning departures sell first.

Book the train when the 15-day window opens, then choose a hotel by station rather than by star rating. The wrong station costs more than the room upgrade.
