Most Xi’an hotel advice ranks neighbourhoods by charm. This one ranks them by how early you have to leave to beat the crowd at Pit 1.
Xi’an’s sights are split across a 40-kilometre line: the walled old city in the middle, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its museums to the south, the high-speed station to the north, and the Terracotta Army 35–40 km east in Lintong. No single hotel is close to all four.
The choice that matters most is the one people make last: where you sleep the night before the Terracotta day. Get that right and the rest is a metro ride.
The short answer
| Area | Best for | Metro | Nightly range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bell Tower / inside the wall 钟楼 | First trip: wall, Muslim Quarter, Drum Tower, all on foot | Line 2 (north–south) | RMB 250–700 |
| South Gate / Yongningmen 南门 | The wall at night, calligraphy street, slightly quieter streets | Line 2 | RMB 300–800 |
| Big Wild Goose Pagoda / Qujiang 大雁塔 | Museums, fountains, newer hotels, families | Lines 3 / 4 | RMB 350–1,200 |
| Xi’an North 西安北站 | A dawn train out; nothing else | Lines 2 / 4 / 14 | RMB 200–450 |
| Lintong 临潼 | One night for the pits and Huaqing Pool | Line 9 | RMB 180–400 |
Ranges are indicative for mid-range rooms to international brands, and the top of each band is autumn peak. Confirm the foreign-guest policy with the property before booking.
The museum opens at 08:30 and the coaches arrive between 10:00 and 11:00. Being in Pit 1 before 09:30 is the difference between photographing the army and photographing a hundred backs.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 9 + bus 613 | 75–90 min | RMB 10–15 | Huaqing Pool station, exit C, then 613 or 602 for about 15 minutes |
| Bus 5 / 306 | ~60 min | RMB 7–10 | East square of Xi’an Railway Station, direct to the museum |
| Taxi or ride-hail | 60–70 min | RMB 120–200 | Best value for two or more people, and the only option that beats the crowd without an early start |
| Guided half day with pickup | your call | quoted | Removes the transfer chain entirely; check whether the RMB 120 entry is included |
Two warnings that cost people a morning: on the 613, ignore anyone telling you to get off early for a “better entrance” — ride to the terminal. And the museum sells no tickets at the gate, so an unreserved arrival is a wasted trip, not a queue.
Everything a first visitor wants is walkable: the wall circuit, the Drum Tower, the Muslim Quarter, the calligraphy street. Line 2 runs straight through it, so Xi’an North and the airport transfer are one change away.
Watch out: rooms facing the main roads are loud until late. Ask for a courtyard side.
The newer half of the city: the Shaanxi History Museum, the pagoda squares, the fountain show, and the widest choice of international-brand rooms. Lines 3 and 4 make it easy to reach the old city in about twenty minutes.
Best if you are travelling with children, or want a pool and a quieter street at night.
A station district, not a neighbourhood. It makes sense for one situation: a train before 07:00, or a late arrival you would rather not drag into town. Lines 2 and 4 still reach the Bell Tower in about half an hour.
Watch out: little to eat after 21:00 that is not a chain.
Cheapest of the five and closest to the pits and Huaqing Pool. It works as a single night on a route that continues east, or for a photographer who wants the 08:30 opening without a 06:00 alarm.
Watch out: evenings are quiet, and you will still travel back into the city for the wall and the Muslim Quarter.
Arriving from Chengdu or Chongqing? Our 240-hour itinerary puts Xi’an at the end of a Chengdu–Chongqing–Xi’an loop and explains the rail legs; the ticket guide covers passport booking.
Two nights is the minimum that works: one evening on the wall and in the Muslim Quarter, one morning at the pits, then out. Three nights adds the Shaanxi History Museum and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda without rushing, and is what most first-time visitors end up preferring.
The Xi’an city section covers what to see in that time, and the China travel budget covers what it costs. Comparing hotel areas across cities? The Chengdu guide uses the same method.
Inside the city wall, near the Bell Tower or the South Gate. The Terracotta museum opens at 08:30 and the best window is Pit 1 before 09:30, which means leaving your hotel around 07:00. A wall-interior base keeps that start short and still leaves the evenings in walking distance of the Muslim Quarter and the wall itself.
Only for a single overnight. Lintong saves you a 75-to-90 minute trip each way, but the district is otherwise quiet, and you lose the evenings in the old city. If your Xi’an stay is two nights or more, stay central and make the museum a morning trip.
Metro Line 9 to Huaqing Pool station, exit C, then Lintong bus 613 or 602 for about 15 minutes to the museum car park. Allow 75 to 90 minutes from the centre and roughly RMB 10 to 15 each way. Tourist bus 5 (306) from the east square of Xi’an Railway Station is the other simple option, about an hour for RMB 7 to 10.
Yes. There is no on-site ticket window: entry is real-name with your passport, booked through the museum’s official mini-program or through platforms that resell it with an English interface. Reserve about seven days ahead, and ten or more around Chinese holidays. One ticket covers all three pits, the Bronze Chariot halls and Lishan Garden.
High-speed trains use Xi’an North, which sits on Metro Lines 2, 4 and 14, so it is a straightforward transfer into the centre. Xi’an Railway Station handles conventional trains and is the departure point for bus 306 to the Terracotta Army. Check which one your ticket names before booking a hotel.
International brands and most mid-range hotels do, and they register your passport with the police at check-in. Small guesthouses and apartment-style stays are hit and miss. Confirm in writing before booking, and carry the passport you booked with.
No operator paid for inclusion. Some booking links earn a commission at no extra cost to the reader. Details change — confirm with the official source before you travel.
Reserve the RMB 120 entry before you book the room, then choose a hotel you can leave at 07:00 without a taxi argument.
