Panda keeper for a day: what actually exists in 2026, and what doesn’t

Half the “panda volunteer” products on the internet sell something that no longer exists, never existed, or is closed for renovation. Here is the verified state of play.

“Panda keeper for a day” is the most dreamt-about and most mis-sold experience in Chinese travel. The search results mix three different things: official volunteering at research-centre bases, commercial day programmes that are real but often described as more intimate than they are, and outright fakes that the Chengdu base has publicly disowned.

This page separates the three, with dates and official statements, and tells you what a day actually contains now that enclosure entry has ended.

The short answer

  • Chengdu breeding base: official statement - no third-party volunteer or close-contact programmes, ever. Visit as a ticketed guest; see our West Gate route.
  • Dujiangyan base: closed for renovation, reopening unannounced - any listing still selling it needs checking.
  • Real volunteering runs at Wolong Shenshuping and Ya’an Bifengxia: feed prep, observation, tours, certificate.
  • Since 25 April 2024, no volunteer enters a panda enclosure anywhere.
How this guide was built: Statuses verified 5 November 2026: the Chengdu Research Base’s public statements that it has never cooperated with any organization for volunteer or close-contact activities (republished by People’s Daily, Guangming and rumor-debunking channels); booking-platform notices that the Dujiangyan base of the China Conservation and Research Center is closed for upgrades with reopening unannounced; and the 25 April 2024 cancellation of enclosure-entry activities. Prices are ranges from platform listings, not quotes.

Three things to unlearn first

What a volunteer day actually contains

The real programme is a working day at a research base. A current-shape itinerary:

  1. Morning briefing and base admission with the instructor team.
  2. Bamboo and wowotou preparation - making the steamed corn-bread feed under supervision. This is the hands-on part now.
  3. Observing feeding from the visitor side, with a keeper explaining behaviour and diet.
  4. Documentary screening and museum or facility tour - the research context most visitors never get.
  5. Lunch (included in most packages), afternoon lecture or enrichment-making, and the volunteer certificate issued by the center.

Ages roughly 6 to 70 depending on operator. It is genuinely worthwhile - and it is not cuddling. Listings that imply close contact are mis-sold; listings that promise a certificate, feed prep and behind-the-scenes context are describing the real thing.

Where it runs now: Wolong and Bifengxia

BaseFrom ChengduKnown forProgramme
Wolong Shenshuping 升树坡~2.5–3 h driveHome of Fu Bao; wild-mountain settingRunning
Ya’an Bifengxia 碧峰峡~2–2.5 h driveGorge setting, larger panda numbersRunning

Both are full-day commitments from Chengdu - most products pick up early and return by evening. Operators sometimes switch between bases by crowd levels or holidays; confirm which base your date uses before booking. And a visa note: Wolong sits in Ngawa (Aba) prefecture and Bifengxia in Ya’an - if you are on the 240-hour transit permit, check the permitted-area list first; Ya’an is on Sichuan’s list, Aba is not.

The booking checklist

If you just want to see pandas well

Most visitors are better served by the city base at ¥55 with a smart route than by a ¥hk900+ working day. Our West Gate guide covers the quiet entrance, Hua Hua timing and ticket rules; the decision box there compares the official ticket, a guided half-day with entry included, and a transfer. For the research-centre animals specifically, Panda Valley in Dujiangyan - a separate site from the closed base - remains visitable; see the same guide’s comparison.

FAQ

Is panda volunteering in Chengdu a scam?

The paid "keeper for a day" products sold on travel platforms are real products run at research bases - but the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding itself has stated publicly that it has never cooperated with any organization for volunteer or close-contact experiences. Volunteering in the official sense runs through the China Conservation and Research Center bases, not the city breeding base. Treat any third party claiming an official partnership with the Chengdu base as a red flag.

Can I still book the Dujiangyan volunteer program?

Not right now. The Dujiangyan base of the China Conservation and Research Center is closed for upgrades, reopening date unannounced, and its volunteer program is not running. Some platform listings still show it - always confirm with the operator before paying.

What does volunteering actually involve now?

Since 25 April 2024, volunteers no longer enter panda enclosures: the cleaning and faeces-collection parts were cancelled. A day now covers preparing bamboo and wowotou feed, observing feeding, documentary sessions, museum tours and lectures, ending with a volunteer certificate from the center.

What does it cost?

Platform products range from roughly HKD 900 for a self-arrival basic package to HKD 3,000-plus for private versions with hotel pickup and an English guide. Inclusions vary: ticket, instructor, lunch, materials, certificate and souvenirs are typical; read each listing.

Where can I do it instead?

The Wolong Shenshuping base (home of Fu Bao) and the Ya’an Bifengxia base both continue to run volunteer programs. From Chengdu, Wolong is roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive and Bifengxia similar - both are full-day commitments.

Is there an age limit?

Most listings accept ages 6 to 70, though the exact range varies by operator, and some require accompanying adults for children. The day involves real work periods; it is not a petting experience.

Verified, then booked

See the base first, volunteer deliberately

The ¥55 visit with a good route beats a mis-sold volunteer day. If you want the working day, book Wolong or Bifengxia with eyes open.
