The railway halved this journey and created a new mistake: people book the train, then discover the station is 100 kilometres from the gate.
The Chengdu–Qinghai railway reached Huangshengguan in August 2024, and the run to Huanglongjiuzhai station now takes about a hundred minutes from Chengdu East. Before it, this was a seven-hour drive on mountain roads. The train is genuinely the best way in.
It is also where the planning goes wrong, because “Jiuzhaigou station” is not at Jiuzhaigou. It is at Chuanzhusi, a high-altitude town an hour and fifty minutes away by road. Budget the transfer, or you will spend the first afternoon of a two-day trip on a bus.
The short answer
Sichuan’s 240-hour transit permit covers 11 designated cities only: Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Yibin, Ya’an, Meishan and Ziyang. Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong and Songpan all sit in Aba prefecture, which is outside that list. Going there on a transit permit is a breach even if you are back before the clock runs out.
This trip needs a regular tourist visa, or 30-day unilateral visa-free entry if your passport qualifies for it. Our 240-hour checklist and the country lists explain which applies to you.
| Leg | Fastest | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Chengdu East → Songpan | ~1h 33m | One stop before Huanglongjiuzhai; useful if you sleep at Songpan |
| Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai | ~1h 39m | The station you want for both Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou |
| Chengdu East → Huangshengguan | ~1h 54m | The end of the line; not useful for the park |
Around 10 pairs of trains run daily, from early morning to about 21:00, which makes a same-day return technically possible — and a bad idea, because you would spend six hours in transit to see the valley for four. Fares on this line use flexible market pricing rather than a flat rate, so check the price on the day rather than trusting a figure from a guide.
Booking works like any other China rail ticket: passport verification, a 15-day sales window, and the 12306 app or Trip.com. Our 12306 vs Trip.com guide covers the process; the autumn peak on this line is one of the few places in China where a high-speed ticket does sell out.
The station sits between two parks. Huanglong, the travertine terraces, is about 26 kilometres away and is usually visited on the way in or out. It climbs to roughly 3,576 metres at the top pools, which is higher than most of Jiuzhaigou.
Do not try to do both on the same day you arrive from Chengdu.
A direct scenic-area shuttle leaves from the station forecourt and takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. There is a visitor service centre at the station with a transfer desk; in practice you can walk off the platform and onto a bus in a few minutes.
Buy the shuttle when you book the train if the option exists, or scan to pay on board.
| Base | To the gate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Zhangzha 漳扎镇 | 5–20 min | The default. Hotels from guesthouses to international brands, walkable to the entrance |
| Chuanzhusi / station area | ~1h 50m | Cheaper, high (2,977 m), good for Huanglong; wrong side for Jiuzhaigou |
| Songpan old town | ~2h | A destination in itself; one night, not a base for the park |
Because entry stops at 14:00, where you sleep decides whether you get a full day in the valley. A hotel at the gate means an 08:00 start and eight hours inside. A hotel at the station means leaving at 06:30 to arrive at nine.
Two nights in Zhangzha is the standard shape: arrive, sleep, one full day in the park, sleep, leave. Tell your hotel you need a foreign-guest registration at check-in, and carry your passport.
Jiuzhaigou is a Y. One valley runs up from the gate to a junction, then splits: one arm climbs to Long Lake and the Five-Color Pond, the other to the Primeval Forest. Shuttle buses run to the top and you walk downhill between stops, which is why the park works even at altitude.
You go from Chengdu at about 500 metres to a station at 2,977 metres in under two hours. That is a rapid gain, and it is why the first afternoon often feels flat. Jiuzhaigou itself is gentler than the number suggests: the gate sits around 2,000 metres and the highest lake about 3,100.
| Item | Per person | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Return train | check 12306 | Flexible pricing on this line; it varies by train and date |
| Station → park shuttle | per trip | About 1h50 each way; pay online or on board |
| Park entry, peak | RMB 190 | Off-season (16 Nov–31 Mar) is RMB 80 |
| Shuttle inside the park | RMB 90 | Effectively mandatory; the valley is over 50 km end to end |
| Hotel, Zhangzha | RMB 250–900 | Per night; autumn peak is the top of that range |
| Food | RMB 100–200 a day | Hotpot and yak dishes; park food is basic |

About 1 hour 39 minutes to Huanglongjiuzhai station on the fastest service, and roughly 10 pairs of trains a day, early morning to evening. The station is not at the park: it sits in Chuanzhusi town at 2,977 metres, about 90 to 100 kilometres by road from the Jiuzhaigou gate.
No. Sichuan limits 240-hour transit stays to 11 designated cities, and Jiuzhaigou is in Aba prefecture, which is not on that list. Travellers using the transit permit cannot go there. A regular tourist visa, or 30-day unilateral visa-free entry if your passport qualifies for it, is what makes this trip legal.
Yes. A direct scenic-area shuttle runs from the station forecourt to Jiuzhaigou, roughly 100 kilometres and about 1 hour 50 minutes. There is a visitor service centre at the station, and in practice you can be off the platform and on a bus within minutes. Buy online in advance or scan to pay on board.
Yes, and there is no on-site ticket window. Entry is real-name and timed, sold through the official Jiuzhaigou and Aba tourism mini-programs, with a daily cap of about 41,000 in peak season. Book seven to fourteen days ahead in autumn. Entry stops at 14:00, so an afternoon arrival wastes the ticket.
Zhangzha town, at the park gate. Hotels there put you five to twenty minutes from the entrance for an 08:00 start. Staying near the station in Chuanzhusi is cheaper and convenient for Huanglong, but it is another 1.5 to 2 hours from the Jiuzhaigou gate, which is the wrong side of a 14:00 last entry.
The station is at 2,977 metres and the valley runs from about 2,000 metres at the gate to roughly 3,100 metres at Long Lake. Most visitors notice breathlessness on stairs but nothing more. Coming straight from Chengdu at 500 metres in one morning is the fastest altitude gain of almost any China itinerary, so take the first day slowly.

Entry slot first, because it can sell out. Then the train that gets you there before 14:00. Then a bed in Zhangzha rather than beside the station.
