Itineraries tell you what to do. This one tells you what to book, in which order, so the doing goes smoothly.
Chengdu rewards a light touch: three days, one base, and a short list of real bookings. Everything else on the usual Chengdu checklist — the teahouses, the alley cafés, Jinli — needs nothing but your presence.
The six that matter, in the order we would book them.
The list
Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li puts the old city, the metro interchange and the late-night food within a walk, and Line 2 runs you to both rail stations. Foreign-guest registration is the one filter that matters — see our registration guide for why.
Official tickets are ¥55, real-name, released 14 days ahead, morning-heavy. Two honest routes: book the official slot yourself and arrive at the West Gate by 09:00 (our West Gate route), or take a guided half-day with entry included if the admin at 06:30 sounds unappealing. Klook is not an official ticket channel — on tours, entry comes as part of the package.
The Buddha works as a half-day: Chengdu East to Leshan station (never Leshan North) in 46–70 minutes at ¥54, entry is an ¥80 timed slot booked days ahead. Day 2 of the three — full mechanics in the Leshan guide.
Costs for the whole shape sit in the budget guide; the city’s café side in the Chengdu coffee route.
The teahouses, alleys and food streets, yes. The pandas, no - official tickets are real-name and the 14-day release sells out, and Leshan entry is a timed slot. The hotel is the other one worth locking early in autumn.
It is a trade of admin for money and rigidity: the tour handles entry and transport with an English guide, but follows a fixed route that differs from our West Gate plan. If the 06:30 ticket scramble sounds bad, take the tour; if you want the quieter gate, book official.
Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li for a first visit - walkable evenings, Line 2 to both stations. Our Chengdu hotel guide vetted ten properties with foreign-guest registration in mind.
Only the airport edge: Metro Line 18 runs from TFU but stops around 23:30. A pre-booked car for late arrivals, otherwise metro and one train pair cover all three days.
No operator paid for inclusion. Some booking links earn a commission at no extra cost to the reader. Details change — confirm with the official source before you travel.
Everything else in Chengdu is walk-up. These six are the bookings, in this order, with the windows that matter.
