China transfers: when to pre-book a car, and when to keep your yuan

Transfer upsells are the travel industry’s favourite margin. Some of them are worth every cent — and the skill is knowing which four arrivals those are.

China’s metro and rail systems make most transfers unnecessary — that is the honest baseline, and it is why this site keeps linking the metro. But four specific situations turn a fixed-price car from an upsell into the correct answer, and they are predictable enough to book before you fly.

The four arrivals that need a car

  • After about 23:00 — the metro has stopped and the rank is long.
  • Three or more large cases — stairs, escalators, locker sizes.
  • Families with small children — one name board beats four transfers.
  • Airports far off the metro grid — not every airport has a Line 18.
How this guide was built: Transfer trade-offs from our source-checked airport and station guides (TFU, station-to-metro, Didi); pricing is indicative from traveller reports and the app’s own quotes. Checked 4 November 2026.

Read the guarantees column — that is what you are buying. The pre-booked car does not beat traffic; it removes the negotiation from an exhausted arrival. Our station-to-metro guide and Didi guide cover the other two rails.

What pre-booking actually gets you

What you pay for that: a premium over the metro that is large, and over a Didi that is moderate. On daytime solo arrivals, Didi or the metro win — this is a tool with a narrow, real use.

Where this site has seen it matter

The decision, compressed

Book the car when two of these are true: arrival after 23:00, more than two large cases, children or older relatives, an airport off the metro grid. Otherwise — metro, and spend the difference on dinner. The budget page shows what that difference buys over a trip.

FAQ

Is a pre-booked transfer worth it in China?

For four predictable cases: arrival after about 23:00, three-plus large cases, families with children, and airports off the metro grid. For a daytime solo arrival, the metro or Didi is better and cheaper.

How much does an airport transfer cost?

Fixed-price quotes vary by city and distance - airport runs into major cities typically land in the same range as a taxi (roughly RMB 100-200), sometimes a little more for the guarantee. The value is certainty, not savings.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

The better transfer services track flight numbers and adjust pickup automatically. Confirm that the booking includes flight tracking when you order - it is a standard filter on the main platforms.

Can I get a child seat?

Yes, on request with most pre-booked services - specify when booking. This is one of the real advantages over hailing, where the car that arrives is the car you get.

Buy certainty, not rides

Four arrivals, one booking

Pre-booked cars are for the arrivals you can predict. Everything else moves by metro for a few yuan.
