Xi’an punishes improvisation more than any other big Chinese city, because its best sight is 35 kilometres east and sells no tickets at the gate.
The Xi’an hotel guide settles where to sleep. This page settles what to book, in what order — and Xi’an has exactly four bookings that matter.
The list
RMB 120 flat all year, one ticket covering Pits 1–3, the Bronze Chariot halls and Lishan Garden. There is no on-site ticket window to fall back on — reserve with your passport about seven days ahead, ten around holidays. The morning math: 08:30 opening, 75–90 minutes from the city, so a pit-first day means a 07:00 exit from a Bell Tower hotel. Full logistics in the hotel guide.
Inside the city wall, near the Bell Tower or the South Gate: the wall circuit, Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter are then all evening walks, and Line 2 connects Xi’an North in half an hour. Rooms facing the main roads are loud — ask for a courtyard side.
The city guide carries the sight detail; the budget page the costs.
On peak dates, yes - and there is no gate window to rescue an unreserved arrival. Book with your passport about seven days ahead, ten or more around Chinese holidays. One RMB 120 ticket covers all three pits, the Bronze Chariot halls and Lishan Garden.
Inside the city wall near the Bell Tower or South Gate. It makes the 07:00 Terracotta start survivable and puts the wall and Muslim Quarter within evening walks.
High-speed trains use Xi’an North (Lines 2, 4, 14); conventional trains use the older Xi’an station, which is the departure point for bus 306 to the pits. Check the ticket before choosing the hotel side of town.
It is one of China’s best museums and free - the slot books out fast, so grab it as soon as it releases and build day three around it.
No operator paid for inclusion. Some booking links earn a commission at no extra cost to the reader. Details change — confirm with the official source before you travel.
Xi’an is easy once the four are locked. Everything else is walkable from a wall-side base.
