The difference between eSIMs is not speed - it is where your traffic exits. Pick the wrong one and Gmail stays dark for two weeks.
Blocked apps in China are blocked at the network level. A local SIM or hotel Wi-Fi routes through mainland gateways where Google, Meta and Microsoft consumer services do not resolve. Some travel eSIMs route your data through an international upstream carrier first — and those eSIMs quietly restore the apps you actually need.
This page answers one question: which product does that reliably, and what are the catches.
Skip “fastest” and “5G” marketing. Search the product page for words like international upstream, Singtel, or a plain statement that blocked apps work. The Klook China eSIM (China Unicom / China Telecom radio, Singtel upstream) says exactly that: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and AI chat tools work normally without a VPN.
| Product | Blocked apps on data | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Klook China eSIM | Documented: yes, via Singtel routing | Unlimited throttles to 1 Mbps after 15 GB/day |
| Airalo Chinacom | Reported: usually yes (intl. routing) | Check current plan terms; smaller data caps |
| Local airport SIM | No | Mainland routing; registration queue |
| Hotel Wi-Fi | No | Needs a VPN regardless |
From about US$1.05, 500 MB to unlimited, 1–30 days, dual network (Unicom + Telecom 5G/4G), instant QR delivery, leftover data banks to your next trip. Blocked apps documented as working.
View Klook China eSIM →Established brand, clean app, top-ups mid-trip. Routing typically international; confirm the current plan terms at purchase.
Check Airalo China →App-based eSIM with China plans and a 90-day cookie for us; check its current China package terms before buying.
Check Yesim China →One universal eSIM that works in China and 200+ destinations - useful for multi-country Asia trips after China.
Check Drimsim →Usually yes on the travel eSIMs that route through an international upstream network, because your traffic exits outside the mainland. The Klook China eSIM states plainly that Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok work without a VPN. Hotel Wi-Fi is a different network and still needs a VPN.
For mobile data, often no. But laptops on hotel Wi-Fi have no such routing, so travellers working remotely usually keep a VPN as well. See our China VPN guide for protocols and refunds.
Fair-use throttling. On the Klook China eSIM, unlimited plans run at full speed up to 15 GB per day, then drop to about 1 Mbps for the rest of that day.
