Since June 2025, an unmarked power bank is contraband on Chinese domestic flights. Here is the 60-second version, and the rescue plan if security stops yours.
Chinese security now inspects the power bank itself, not just the tray. Banks without a readable 3C mark, recalled models, or unmarked capacities are confiscated at domestic departures. International arrivals connecting onto a domestic sector get caught mid-journey - usually at the transfer security check.
Any bank sold through official domestic retail (JD, Suning, brand stores) now carries 3C and, on new production, the QR code. Anker, Ugreen and Xiaomi units from RMB 79. Keep the receipt until you fly. Avoid market-stall no-name banks - that is exactly what the rule exists to catch.
Only if it has a clear 3C mark, is not a recalled model, is for personal use, and stays in your carry-on. Since 28 June 2025 China bans power banks without a readable 3C mark on domestic flights. From 1 March 2026 a new standard adds a scannable QR code beside the 3C mark; banks already carrying a valid 3C mark remain acceptable under current rules.
Up to 100 Wh: carry-on, no approval needed. 100 to 160 Wh: airline approval required. Over 160 Wh: banned. Damaged banks or banks with no marked rating are refused. Power banks never go in checked baggage.
Options: leave it with a non-flying friend, use airport self-service shipping points where available (SF Express counters at many airports), or surrender it. Then buy a certified replacement at a convenience store or via same-day JD.com delivery, or use shared power-bank rentals (Jiedian, Energy Monster) which scan via Alipay or WeChat.
The ban was issued for domestic flights, and enforcement is strictest there. Security at mainland airports applies the same basics (Wh limits, carry-on only) on international departures too - treat the 3C mark as required at any mainland airport.
Independent research; no operator paid for inclusion. Rules can change — confirm with the official source before you travel.
Check the 3C mark before you fly, and pair the bank with an eSIM that survives arrival.
