Nine out of ten payment meltdowns in China follow the same script: the app installs fine, the passport verifies, and then one specific step - an SMS code, a card binding, a hotel payment - throws an error the app does not explain in English.

Verification stuck at “ID Validated – Not Authenticated”? That is a separate failure with its own fix page.
The usual cause is a name mismatch: the app expects the name exactly as printed on the passport photo page, including hyphens. Photograph the passport flat, all four corners visible, no flash glare. Rejections usually clear on the second clean attempt.
Too many failed codes or a new-device login can freeze the account. Start the appeal inside the app (Identity Verification), upload the passport, and expect 24–48 hours. Keep a payment backup for that window: cash for small shops, a physical card at hotels.
Both apps accept major-scheme cards, but binding requires 3-D Secure to succeed. Update the app first, confirm the card allows online and cross-border transactions in your bank app, and retry on mobile data. If one card refuses, try the other app - Alipay and WeChat verify cards independently.
Small shops decline foreign cards on the “platform fee” logic: payments over ¥200 to some merchant types can fail. Ask the staff to split the bill, or pay the exact amount in two transactions. The fee mechanics are explained in the setup guide.
Eligible: visitors staying 183 days or less, plus Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan travellers. Cash refunds are capped at RMB 20,000; above that the refund goes back to a card. Keep purchases unused and receipts together until you have left.
Check that your number uses the right international format with your dialling code, wait two to three minutes, and retry outside peak hours. If it still fails, use the email verification option or appeal inside the app with your passport photo page.
