Harbin Ice-Snow World: the winter trip worth −25 degrees

A city built around ice: a full-scale theme park of lit ice architecture, a snow-sculpture park next door, and evenings at minus twenty that people remember for years.

Harbin’s ice season is the single most time-boxed attraction in China: the park exists for roughly ten weeks, it is genuinely spectacular, and it is genuinely cold — January evenings run −15 to −25°C. Done right it is a two-night trip that pairs an evening at the ice park with a daytime snow-sculpture park and a very good food city.

Two tickets, two parks, one metro line. Here is the whole plan, with the product links in the order you should book them.

The short answer

  • Book the hotel before the tickets — New Year and Chinese New Year weeks sell out first.
  • Two parks, separate tickets: Ice-Snow World (evening, ~RMB 328 last season) and Sun Island (daytime, ~RMB 198).
  • Best evening pattern: enter 15:30–16:00, see the ice in daylight, stay for the lights.
  • Stay on Central Street — Line 2 reaches both parks direct.
How this guide was built: Last season’s ticket prices, hours and the late-December opening pattern from official Ice-Snow World and Sun Island announcements (26th and 27th editions); metro lines and Beijing train times from current maps and 12306 listings, checked 2 November 2026. The 2026–27 season’s dates and prices publish on official channels in late autumn — confirm before booking. Cold-weather advice is editorial.

Two parks, two tickets

ParkTicket (last season)HoursWhat it is
Ice-Snow World 冰雪大世界RMB 328 standard, all-inclusive slides + ferris wheel; concessions ~240; VIP from ~80011:00–22:00Full-scale lit ice architecture, giant slides, evening shows
Sun Island Snow Expo 太阳岛雪博会RMB 198 standard (trial-period discounts existed)9:00–17:00Daytime snow-sculpture park; separate gate, separate ticket

Both parks publish the new season on their official WeChat accounts in late autumn; recent editions opened around 21 December. Admission is real-name with ID — foreigners book via official presale windows or platforms with English checkout. Book refundable hotels first; the two New Year weeks are the sell-out risk.

Getting there

From Beijing, high-speed rail runs about 40 departures a day, fastest around four and a half hours, mostly arriving at Harbin West — some trains use the older Harbin station, which is closer to the centre. Fares float by demand. From southern cities, fly into Taiping (HRB), about two hours from Beijing.

Book rail when the 15-day window opens; ice-season weekends move fast. See the ticket guide.

Where to sleep

Central Street (中央大街) is the right base: walkable evenings, food at the door, and Line 2 direct to both parks. Staying beside the ice park itself means one metro stop saved and nothing to do after dinner.

Confirm foreign-guest registration at booking; see the hotel-guide method we use for every city.

The two-night plan

  1. Day 1 — arrive, then the ice. Check in on Central Street, walk it and Saint Sophia Square in daylight, eat early, then Line 2 to Ice-Snow World for 15:30–16:00 entry: the architecture reads best with daylight behind it, and the lights take over around 16:30. Slides first (queues grow), ferris wheel at full dark, out by 21:00 with working fingers.
  2. Day 2 — snow by day. Sun Island Snow Expo from opening (sculptures are best before midday light flattens them), afternoon at the Siberian Tiger Park or Volga Manor, evening back on Central Street for a Russian-influenced dinner and the ice lanterns in Zhaolin Park if they are up.
  3. Day 3 — out. Morning market or Cathedral photos, then train or flight out. Harbin Airport is ~40 minutes by taxi from Central Street.

Extending to Yabuli skiing or China Snow Town (雪乡) is possible by bus or transfer — compare driver quotes rather than accepting the first one.
