Five cafés where the view, the room and the coffee are worth the detour — from a pharmacy terrace at Baitasi to a tiled roof in Qianmen.

Metro + Didi

Beijing’s best coffee is rarely on the big road. It is upstairs from a pharmacy, on a tiled rooftop in Qianmen, or at the end of a hutong where the only sign is a small door.

This route links five places we would shortlist for a slow afternoon. It is not a ranking of the “best” coffee in the city; it is a practical crawl built around three things that decide whether a stop works: where to sit, what to order, and when the light is right.

How this guide was built: Compiled from public venue information and recent visitor reports (checked October 2026). Café photography was supplied with the original guide. Hours and rooftop access change — confirm before you go.

01

YAO CAFÉ 耀咖啡

Baitasi · White Pagoda view · third-floor terrace

You walk through a working pharmacy, climb the stairs, and step onto a terrace facing the White Pagoda. The cup sleeve reads “中药治病,咖啡续命” — herbs treat the illness, coffee keeps you alive. It is a very Beijing joke, and the view is the reason to come.

Order 龟苓膏拿铁 — herbal jelly latte

Where: Above the Baitasi pharmacy, third-floor terrace (白塔寺药店楼上)

Best time After 15:00, when the light rakes across the grey tiled roofs.
Good to know The terrace is weather-dependent and seats are first-come. Check before climbing.

02

CAFE NOTION

Qianmen · Nanhuoshan Hutong · tile rooftop

A low-key entrance opens into a wabi-sabi room with plants and a fourth-floor tiled roof. The view is old Beijing: grey roofs, city gates, no glass towers. It is easy to walk past — look for a small door, not a big sign.

Order Pour-over or a milk coffee

Where: Nanhuoshan Hutong, Xicheng (西城区南火扇胡同)

Best time Around 16:00, when the roof light softens.
Good to know The rooftop is small. Go off-peak if you want to sit rather than perch.

03

Fuding Coffee 福顶咖啡

Wudaoying Hutong · Yonghe Temple view

A third-floor terrace looks directly at the golden roof of Yonghe Temple. Wudaoying is calmer than Nanluoguxiang; on a good day you can hear pigeon whistles and the lane feels like a village.

Order Pour-over

Where: Wudaoying Hutong, Dongcheng (东城区五道营胡同)

Best time Late afternoon, before sunset.
Good to know The terrace is small; weekends fill up quickly.

04

Tangfang Coffee 糖房咖啡

Shichahai · rooftop lake view

The rooftop looks over the lake. At blue hour the water shifts from gold to blue, and the whole of Shichahai feels briefly quiet. Order something cold and stay for the transition.

Order An iced drink; sit on the top floor

Where: Near Shichahai (什刹海旁)

Best time Arrive around 17:30 and stay for sunset.
Good to know The best seats face the lake; it is a popular time, so arrive early.

05

Metal Hands 铁手咖啡制造总局

Dongsi / Qianmen · specialty roaster

One of the names that built Beijing’s specialty coffee scene. The Dongsi room mixes industrial fittings with hutong textures, and the Dirty is a good first step into milk-and-coffee balance. If you only have time for one coffee, make it this one.

Order 冰博克 Dirty — ice-bock dirty

Where: Dongsi branch, with another branch at Qianmen (东四店 / 前门店)

Best time Any time; it fits at Qianmen or Dongsi rather than the rooftop loop.
Good to know A good final stop or a separate visit if you are short on time.

FAQ

Do I need to book these cafés?

Most are walk-in. Rooftop tables are first-come; go off-peak or accept a short wait.

What is the best time for photos?

Mid-afternoon to blue hour: 15:00–17:00 for rooftops, 17:30 onwards at Shichahai.

Can I visit all five in one day?

Yes, but it is rushed. Two afternoons is better: Baitasi/Qianmen, then Wudaoying/Shichahai.
