Shanghai’s coffee scene is not only on Anfu Road. Some of the most interesting rooms are inside shikumen lane houses: a 1907 merchant’s mansion, a tiny shop at the end of a longtang, a wine-cellar space under a staircase.

This half-day route links three of them. It is built for people who would rather sit in a courtyard than queue for a photo, with the addresses and orders that make the detour worthwhile.

Hongkou · 1907 merchant’s house · courtyard

A 1907 Cantonese merchant’s house with grey brick, stone door frames and a lane layout. It opened as Yichi Garden in January 2025; many visitors mistake it for a heritage attraction and walk past. Inside, the red-brick arches, wooden windows and spiral staircase slow the day down.

Oaks 19

Nanyang Road · wine-cellar room · seasonal specials

A wine-cellar-like room under a staircase; easy to walk past. You can roll a die to choose a special or pick from the seasonal menu. The “Thailand seaside” uses kaffir lime, tamarind, finger lime, longkong and coconut water — bright and tart against a deep coffee base.

Order Osmanthus cream cold brew (38 RMB) or the omakase special (48 RMB)

Where: 72-1 Nanyang Road, Jing’an (静安区南阳路72-1号)

Best time Early afternoon; it can fill up by 16:00 on Fridays.
Good to know The cold brew is strong; ask for less cream if you prefer less sweetness.
